Potential Health Benefits of a Vegan Diet

Ryerson University student Teja Peltomaa has held multiple volunteer positions that have instilled in her a sense of community and connection to others. A crisis line text responder with Kids Help Phone, she has also volunteered with the Oakville Animal Clinic and the Salvation Army Thrift Store. In her free time, Teja Peltomaa enjoys learning about vegetarianism and vegan cooking.

A vegan diet, which involves avoiding all food products of animal origin, including meat, dairy, and eggs, has numerous potential benefits. First, eliminating meat, as well as many processed foods, can reduce inflammation in the body, which is a precursor to conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, and even cancer. A properly balanced vegan diet can therefore contribute to a decreased risk for chronic disease.

Next, veganism can increase nutrient intake, as a diet free from animal products typically includes a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. A vegan diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as legumes and foods high in fiber, has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, as well as a 15 percent lower risk of dying from cancer.
